Which clubs have the Premier League’s hidden gems?

Back in June, after one of Ecuador’s matches in the Copa América, I tweeted about Jefferson Montero being one of just three players from Swansea City with an above average rating in both of my public models. Now in his peak years for performance on the pitch, he’s a player any Premier League club would like to have on its roster. Moreover, coming from a middling team, he might have been available cheaply to a bigger club acting early in the current transfer window. But was he the only hidden gem in the league?

The computer says no. Below is a list of last season’s Premier League clubs and the number of players they had with a minimum rating of 50 and/or 75 out of 100 in my models. One model is based on shot creation, and the other measures how players move the ball into dangerous areas; both models cover attacking and defending. All the players below had at least 1,000 minutes of game time last season. Using a lower threshold for minutes throws up more names, as in my list of top young prospects.

It won’t surprise you that the top clubs had the most gems, but there were some hidden ones down the table as well. Most of them are still with their clubs – can you guess who they are?

Note: You’ll see that Swansea only have two players now, instead of three; a tweak I made to the models over the summer dropped one player’s minimum rating to 49. Alas!
